Downtown Evening Soup Kitchen (DESK)
New Haven, CT
For over 35 years, the Downtown Evening Soup Kitchen (DESK) has served as a vital pillar of the New Haven community. However, as the city’s needs evolved, the fragmented nature of DESK’s operations which were previously spread across three separate, disconnected facilities, created significant barriers to care for the city’s most vulnerable residents. The vision for the 266 State Street project was to consolidate these services into a single, high-impact Drop-In and Resource Center.
This project represents a revolutionary “layered” service model, marking what is believed to be the first time a soup kitchen has integrated professional medical and psychiatric services directly into its core program. To achieve this, a diverse project team had to work in lockstep, balancing the requirements of historic preservation, healthcare regulations, and the unique needs of a population experiencing trauma and homelessness.

Yale University / Yale New Haven Health Steam Utility Upgrades
New Haven, CT
This project upgraded steam distribution serving the Yale Sterling Power Plant, Yale University, Yale New Haven Hospital, and Connecticut Mental Health Center to improve safety, reliability, and system isolation.
Because the system serves critical healthcare and research facilities, the work required an unusually high level of coordination between university staff, hospital engineers, designers, contractors, and maintenance personnel. Early collaboration identified that a full steam shutdown was unavoidable, so the team developed a multi-phased plan allowing critical hospital functions to remain operational. Detailed safety planning, synchronized valve replacements, and coordinated construction across multiple organizations allowed deferred maintenance to be completed while minimizing risk to patient care and campus operations.
