James Blackstone Memorial Library | Branford, CT

As a builder, the thought of renovating and adding onto an 1896 National Register library is exhilarating. But the project languished for 12-years from lack of funding, and could have become quite daunting, understanding the quality required for this special place. Fortunately, the entire team –Board, Library Director, Staff, Silver Petrucelli + Associates, Trade Contractors and Downes Construction –all recognized that restoring this treasure was possible through creativity and fine craftsmanship. Today, administration is consolidated, the interior has been restacked with children’s services now on main level, and a beautiful new addition houses circulation, lobby and a rooftop terrace for events.

Designed by James Gamble Rogers in 1931, the Franke Family Reading Room originally served Yale University’s Sterling Memorial Library as the Reserve Book Room and later as the Periodicals Room until becoming storage swing space. Together, the team of Apicella + Bunton Architects and Whiting-Turner transformed the historic library into the now cutting-edge headquarters for digital humanities research. Beautifully renovated and restored, the space includes office, breakout, and presentation areas fully equipped with sophisticated computing capabilities. Sterling Hall of Medicine Library Renovation, Yale University | New Haven, CT

Transforming the library at Yale’s School of Medicine depended on a commitment by everyone involved to collaborate at every scale and stage of the project. Our team relied on each other’s training and expertise to successfully navigate a 1940s building and its geometrically complex 1990s addition. Spanning three floors, the project replaced underused reading rooms and book stacks with a suite of new classrooms, incorporating state-of-the-art collaborative learning technology, extensive custom finishes, new building systems, and complex structure. Our team members demonstrated themselves to be fluent collaborators with a practiced attention to detail; each was essential to successfully executing the project.

Rehabilitation of US Rte 1 Over I-95, Bridge 37 | Norwalk, CT

CTDOT had classified Bridge No. 00037 in Stamford as structurally obsolete: it had carried traffic on USRoute 1 over Interstate 95 since 1958. Given I-95’s heavy traffic count and the density of the local population and businesses, accelerated bridge construction was chosen for replacing the bridge. Twonew spans were built alongside Bridge 37 and because all team members worked strategically and cooperatively, through challenges, bridge demolition and replacement on two climactic, back-to-back weekends went without complications. Crews were off the highway ahead of schedule both weekends, minimizing traffic disruptions,and this high-profile project was completed under budget.
